The flat had been divided into seven small rooms, four of them without a window. We removed two partitions, not seven: the kitchen now opens to the dining room, and the light well, once a utility shaft, lights both through a new full-height glazed door.
The hydraulic tiles were lifted, cleaned and relaid one by one; the 18% that were broken were replaced with a plain terracotta tile rather than a copy, so old and new stay legible.
The study sits under a skylight we found boarded over in the ceiling void. Its walls are lime-washed in a warm ochre that changes colour with the hour.
