The site falls nine metres from the road to the lower boundary. Instead of levelling it, the house follows the contour in two terraces, and the stone dug out for the foundations went straight back into the retaining walls.
Openings are set deep in the walls, never flush. From inside they frame a single piece of sea; from outside they read as shadows rather than glass. Niches carved into the same thickness hold books, lamps and the clients' collection of ceramics.
The finishes are limited to what salt air can live with: lime render, stone, untreated iroko and brass that is allowed to darken.
